The Audley Recreation Centre and Park Complex completes a 100 acre sports and wellness park site, in a rapidly developing residential area of the Town of Ajax, Ontario. The new complex is developed as a model for integrating public facilities within the Ajax suburban residential and roads network. It has effectively internalized the traffic and parking functions within the site, presenting a park and park pavilion to the neighbourhood, easily accessed by walking paths.
The site resolution develops an internal street and parking courtyard to serve both the sports fields (2015 Pan American Games Softball Venue) and the new recreation facility, fronted by an orchard and skate park. The facility entrance elevation faces north to the sports fields, with the gymnasium, aquatic centre, and library visible to the internal street. The new facility and expansion phases (currently in design) are configured with ‘flow-through’ lobbies between major program areas to the park programming of walking and biking trails, splash pad, playgrounds, outdoor skating, sensory gardens, dog park, and food truck and event areas to the south. A north / south concourse, designed as a public art gallery, connects all program areas within the recreation complex.
The relationship of the building, park areas, and parking, recognize the suburban precinct in which they are located, and provide an open, luminous, connection between all elements of the recreation centre and park programs.
